“Knack Academics is a multi-disciplinary tutoring firm based in West Vancouver, BC. Specializing in applied science and mathematics, I was commissioned to develop a clear, bold visual identity characterizing the firm’s intelligent, approachable teaching style.

“I worked to develop a marketing and advertising strategy for Knack; as well as a messaging foundation underscored by the tagline “Discover Your Great Mind.”

“Finchtail is a new company dedicated to (simple useful) things. Their first product is a cardboard tablet stand. Cheap to buy and sustainably made — in stark contrast to the sleek glass and metal technology that it’s designed to support. We sought to explore this juxtaposition through the careful interplay of language, design, print and materials.

“Every aspect of the brand experience reflects the strategy, and everything is delivered with precision and purpose. The marque is inspired by the tablet stand itself, while also connecting to ideas of travel, adventure and social living. Packaging is deliberately limited to black and white inks, while bright orange stock (inspired by the Finch’s plumage) plays beautifully with the neutrality of the kraft board, leveraging distinctiveness and colour association. Language stays focused on being informative and helpful, while always conveying a sense of humanity.

“In addition to the brand and packaging, we also created the marketing materials, including a (simple useful) website and launch video. Finchtail attracted immediate interest from a global travel company, plus a listing in the Design Museum’s shop (with an initial order that sold out in days).”

“Known for their adventurous flavors, Brooklyn-based Hay Rosie Craft Ice Cream Co. uses only the freshest local ingredients and is quickly becoming a neighborhood favorite. We designed the brand to communicate their farm-grown, made-form-scratch philosophy and developed a unique packaging system that would set them apart from traditional pints.”

“Bao has the same meaning in Chinese and in Vietnamese: dumpling. The noodle pocket is made in a wide range all across Southern-Asia and they come in different types: they have sweetie, salty, streamed and fried version. In the footsteps of these variations BAOBAO dim sum bar combines all of these elements as a Pan-Asian mixture in a top-notch quality.

“In the making of the identity I have been inspired from all my Far East travel experiences (Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos). The interior design was conceived in a tight partnership with the 81font Architecture who were eager to accommodate Hungarian craftsmanship in relation to the eastern culture. According to this concept they delegated a Hungarian basket-maker artist to prepare all the woven ceiling lamps. A Vietnamese tale, The Hundred-knot Bamboo Tree is printed on the woven fibers which creates a strange cultural passage between the folk art of distant nations.

“I have made a dozen hand drawings during my Asian journey therefore these sketches became a starting point of the interior’s imagery including the dim sum reference drawings which were painted on the wall after projection. The cooking processes are indicated on different labels as well, all using a typical neon red tone specifically present in the Vietnamese urban landscapes and hand-painted glazed signs. This tone is in frequent use in Vietnam with food-stamps as well, they mark different kind of fillings with the stamp used on the noodle’s bare surface. The origami folded chopstick cases and the bamboo streamer pots wear the same neon red logo which was applied by tampon printing. The menu card is from disposable paper on which the guests are able mark their order. There is a farewell surprise – when leaving every guest gets a fortune cookie in which the content is carefully dedicated to the truth whatever it may be.

“The restaurant has its own draft beer therefore I made the beer mat part of the identity which evokes Asian visual culture with fine hop drawings.”

The paper is all custom duplexed from French Paper Poptone colors. We love the color options and small quantity availability of this paper line. These cards are printed on Gumdrop Green, Wild Cherry and Blu Raspberry each pasted to Poptone Sweet Tooth White on the opposite site for a 200lb heavy weight. The cards were printed by Studio On Fire with a metallic silver ink first, then overprinted in black.
