“We letterpress printed these white on white business cards for the industrious Josephmark. They decided on a thick Crane Lettra in Pearl White, a stock you’ve probably heard us rabbit on about. All of our Crane paper is imported from the US and is 100% cotton (which means no trees are harmed). It’s our favourite stock for letterpress as the cotton fibers give way to a great impression. The 600gsm weight is extra special though, as it is constructed of two sheets of 300gsm weight paper glued together to form a super thick board. The design for the card was originally a black logo on the front, but to really show off the process of letterpress and it’s unique finish we tested a few cards with a blind impression and a few with white ink, eventually settling on the latter.
“The white ink gives a slight kick to the type, it seals and packs down the fibers of the paper and adds a subtle contrast in colour which is handy in low light situations. In full light situations, the ink is hardly noticeable and really shows off the deep impression of letterpress with elegant shadows along the ridges of their logo.
“The real genius though is in the rubber stamp. Letterpress printing isn’t exactly cheap: it’s labour intensive and the good stock has to come a long, long way. Using a rubber stamp to personalise the cards is a clever solution to an economical problem. You can create a card for yourself when you need it and in the exact volume you require. Not everyone in the studio is in a client facing role, and there’s nothing worse than having a beautiful stack of letterpress cards that no one ever sees!
“Resourceful, subtle, beautiful and clever. It really sums up the folk at Josephmark, doesn’t it?”
